I am a medical registrar based out of Arrowe Park Hospital (Wirral University Teaching Hospital), currently specialising in rheumatology having gained MRCP qualification in 2021. My work in rheumatology over the last 4 years has provided me with a depth of experience in the field of musculoskeletal medicine, an area of medicine which I love. I am proficient in the assessment and management of a variety of complex MSK based pathologies and am also competent performing soft tissue and joint injection therapy independently. I enjoy the MDT based approach of care that MSK medicine provides, and I am well-versed in liaising with all members of the musculoskeletal MDT including radiologists, GPs, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists alike. My work as a medical registrar over the last 5 years has also helped to solidify skills in acute medicine and emergency medicine, and also helped to develop new qualities in leadership and working in a high-pressured, time-critical environment as part of a team. I am currently concluding an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Manchester Metropolitan University, which finishes in December 2023. This has advanced my knowledge and skills in caring for elite athletes in sport, whilst supplying me with the most up to date evidence for treating athletes over a wide range of levels, abilities, and ages. It has also helped me in caring for future patient’s I see within the broader healthcare system, particularly in reference to physical activity as a means of promoting health, and exercise prescribing in a wide range of conditions. My dissertation, entitled “Analgesia Prescribing Behaviours of Physicians Working in Rugby Union and Rugby Sevens”, is a UK and Ireland wide original research study, which has taught me skills in clinical research and communication with medical departments across several sport’s governing bodies in other countries. I look forward to publishing the results of the study in the coming months. I presently work at Caldy Rugby Club, having joined the club as lead Team Doctor at the beginning of the 2022/23 season after they had successfully gained promotion to The Championship (second tier English Rugby) the season prior. I currently hold the role of Team Doctor and Head of Clinical Governance at the club, which has not only provided me with invaluable experiences in the delivery of team care for a large squad of 70 athletes, but has also allowed me to develop skills in clinical governance and the provision of high quality, safe and regulated care to a squad. This summer I travelled abroad as Team Doctor for the England Touch Rugby squad, supplying me with the new experience of team care delivery in a foreign setting and its associated challenges. I also fulfilled the role of tournament doctor at the Touch Rugby Atlantic Youth Cup competition which has furthered my experience in caring for athletes within a paediatric and adolescent population. Lastly, I also hold position of Team Doctor at Cheshire Rugby Football Club. They play as a county level rugby team who play in the summer as part of a cup tournament against other counties. In relation to football, during my core medical training I worked for Everton Women FC as their matchday doctor. This was an excellent experience, helping to lay down the foundational skills in caring for footballers covering a wide range of issues and injuries. Further shadowing opportunities at Liverpool Women FC and Liverpool FC Academy have been enlightening experiences to see how an academy medical department is ran, having witnessed the roles and responsibility of the doctor both on matchdays and during training in the week. I am ATMMIF (Level 5) and PHICIS Level 3 accredited (in date), and these courses along with my sports medicine experience and hospital-based specialist training have provided me with the necessary experience and skillset to deal with the emergencies and injuries potentially encountered in a sports setting. In the future I plan on embarking on the Specialist-registrar based training programme in the field of Sports and Exercise Medicine, with the aim of becoming a consultant in the field.
